Wauconda and the surrounding communities are located on the border of Lake and McHenry Counties, Illinois, about 45 miles northwest of Chicago and 65 miles southwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The village is known for its 306-acre recreational lake, perfect for boating, swimming and fishing, as well as excellent restaurants and shopping in its historical downtown. The Millennium Trail, part of the Lake County Forest Preserve, runs along the east side of Wauconda, providing residents and visitors’ easy access to an extensive walking and biking trail.
Also, many industrial businesses have chosen to locate in Wauconda due to proximity to highways, airports and Lake Michigan. The major north-south artery is US Highway 12, while east-west highways include Route 176, Route 120, and Route 60.
Just to the north, Volo is home to the Volo Auto Museum and Antique Mall, a favorite destination for car enthusiasts. Lakemoor is known for its wonderful fireworks display during the annual Lakemoor Fest. Just west of Wauconda, residents enjoy the peaceful neighborhoods of Island Lake, which straddles the Lake & McHenry County border.
