As many
as 1,000 people per day visit the Wauconda Area Library that serves more
than 22,000 residents. This full-service public library offers a
collection of over more than 120,000 books, periodicals, videos, and audio
recordings, as well as a wide variety of state-of-the-art electronic
resources, including high-speed access to the Internet at thirty computers Recently, the library has added a self-checkout station, free wireless high-speed Internet access for laptops, and a hands-on computer-training lab, and has made improvements to its large collection of books, DVD’s, CD’s, and audiobooks. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, the library now shows full-feature movies on a theatre-size screen with theatre-quality surround-sound. The library was founded in 1939 by the Wauconda Women’s |

Club and became a township library in 1962. A new 10,000 square-foot facility located next to Wauconda High School was dedicated in 1987, and the conversion to a public library district occurred a year later. In November 1995, voters approved a $4.5 million expansion and remodeling project, and the new 27,500 square foot building . The library received the prestigious Distinguished Building Award in 1998 from the American Institute of Architects because of the building's lively, animated quality.
Library cards are available to any resident of the Wauconda Area Public Library District and may be used in most Illinois libraries. A library card can be obtained at the Information Desk with the required proof of home address and valid identification, first time free of charge and thereafter for a $2 fee. Parents or guardians may obtain cards for children of ages five through 14 and are responsible for all materials checked out by children. Keychain cards available upon request for patrons over the age of 16. Library cards must be presented to check out any library materials.
The library web site: www.wauclib.org is your best and most current information resource for all of the library’s policies, services, and programs. Use the web-based library catalog with your PIN number to place holds, renew items checked out, and much more! Recently, the library has added tutor.com’s Live Homework Help, a web-based service specifically for students from 5th through 12th grade. The library also hosts and maintains the Wauconda Area Community Information Network (www.waucondaarea.info) which features the comprehensive web-based Community Calendar listing hundreds of local events each month.
Library events are scheduled throughout the year. These free programs are designed to entertain and inform, and to introduce the public to the Library's services. For dates and times, check the library’s web site or the library’s newsletter.
The
Children’s department, located on the library’s lower level, serves
infants through 5th graders and their parent/caregivers. In addition to
35,000 books and audiovisual items for children, special features include
a parent/teacher collection, a large preschool play area, a beautiful
story time room, a special room for crafts programs, and a 300-gallon
aquarium. Children eight years old
