Recreation

The Wauconda Park District was established in 1959 to serve the recreational needs of the community.  The District currently manages approximately 75 acres of park and open space, one community center featuring a gymnasium, five multipurpose classrooms and a fitness center equipped with treadmills, a
step mill, Stairmasters, elliptical trainers, upright bikes, recumbent bikes and a full line of free weights. The Community Center also is home to the Wauconda Park District Administrative Offices.

The District’s largest park, Homer T. Cook Memorial Park,
houses five of the District’s ball fields, a picnic shelter, two soccer fields, access to fishing, a sand volleyball court, a walking path and a skate park. In June 2004, the District performed a $60,000 renovation to this park’s playground.  The park plays host to the annual Wauconda Fest every June.  This summer celebration event is sponsored by several community

businesses and draws thousands of people to the community for a weekend of music, games, and fun.

Beach Park, a 1-acre park located on the shores of Bangs Lake, holds the District’s marina operations and is home to the only public beach on the lake. Beach operations are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day with a staff of certified lifeguards.  Interested participants can purchase season passes or pay on a daily basis. Beach Park also features a newly renovated playground that is sure to be fun for kids of all ages.

In addition to these parks and facilities, the District has other park sites located throughout various neighborhoods.  These park sites are open from dawn to dusk. The District also offers a variety of programs for participants ranging in age from 6 months to 100 years. Choose from hundreds of programs including youth instructional sports, youth leagues, sailing lessons, preschool, the club, arts & crafts, aerobics, fitness center, beach, marina, adult special interests and many more. Program offerings are listed in the Park District Brochure which can be obtained at the Community Center.
